Phyllis Plattner is a representational artist who lives and works in Bethesda, MD, just outside Washington, DC. She teaches painting and drawing at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, and exhibits her work extensively both in this country and in Europe. She has lived for extended periods of time in the city of San Cristobal in Chiapas, Mexico, and also in the Tuscan countryside between Florence and Siena in Italy. Her experiences living abroad have had a profound impact on her art, feeding and shaping its evolution. Her current work combines images of little woolen dolls made in Chiapas, representing the Zapatista guerrillas from the recent indigenous uprising there, with Italian renaissance gold leaf religious painting.
